Figs are the edible fruits of ficus carica. These plants are originated in the Mediterranean area. The world´s production is done in Turkey and other North African countries.
Figs are high in anti- oxidants. There are some suggestions that they might be helpful in breast cancer prevention. High levels of Calcium, Potassium and Magnesium may strengthen bone tissue. So it may be a good osteoporosis prophylaxis. The content of tryptophan (an amino acid) helps to build melatonin which is not only our “sleep hormone” but also a potent anti-oxidant which plays also a role in the treatment of chronic inflammatory processes like Lyme.
In ancient times a paste of honey and fresh figs was applied onto the face in order to nourish the delicate skin. The amount of vitamin C and E and the high contents of fiber have additional health aspects.
But overall figs are just delicious:
You can eat them dried or fresh, in salads, as a snack, as a natural sweetener, in cookies, in cakes, in smoothies, in fruit salads, as a chutney with savory dishes – be creative.
